#1: Note Sigmatel recovery guide (Updated) Author: Th3_uN1Qu3 Post Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 6:09 pm

Here's a quick guide in recovering your Sigmatel-based player after a bad flash.

First check the firmware version you got. If it's an older version that is made up of 4 files and contains usbmsc.sb, follow the guide below. If it is made up of more files, usually 6, and contains hostlink.sb, then skip to the newer firmware section of this guide.

For older firmware (that contains usbmsc.sb):

1. Install this program.

2. Get your player into recovery mode by holding Play for 10 seconds, then plugging the player in with the button held. Hold it for another 10 seconds then release it.

3. Your computer should detect a "Player Recovery Device", point the driver search to the folder you installed the firmware updater in.

4. After the drivers are installed, copy working firmware to the firmware updater folder, overwriting the original ones. Start the firmware updater, it should allow you to flash the player and return it to working condition.

Note: If the update program mentioned above does not work, try this one. Extract it in a folder of your choice, copy the firmware in its folder and see if it can flash your player. Keep the other one installed though, you will need it too as this one doesn't contain the drivers necessary for your computer to recognize your player as a "recovery device".

For newer firmware (that contains hostlink.sb):

1. Download and install this program.

2. Get your player into recovery mode by holding Play for 10 seconds, then plugging the player in with the button held. Hold it for another 10 seconds then release it.

3. Your computer should detect a "Player Recovery Device", point the driver search to the folder you installed the firmware updater in.

4. After the drivers are installed, you can try the firmware bundled with this program, it is in the Binary folder. If it doesn't work, proceed same as above, copy firmware files to the firmware updater folder, overwriting the original ones, and flash away. Wink

General notes (twice as long as the guide itself Laughing):

If the program displays an error, try different firmware. Version numbers don't matter, just check that they are for a similar player. I also recommend you not to use FileFixer.

If the program gets stuck and keeps searching forever, your player is most likely NOT in recovery mode. Follow steps 2 and up again, the screen of the player should stay blank during the entire process, or light up when you connect it to the computer but go blank again after a few seconds. On some players the screen goes white after you connect it to the computer. Another possibility is that the firmware's USB driver is incompatible with the player's chipset, and you should try another one.

Hint: When the USB driver contained in the firmware (usbmsc.sb or hostlink.sb) is compatible with your chipset and you get a succesful flash, the player will be recognized as an USB disk. In this case, do not overwrite this file when you try new firmware, only change the other ones. The firmware is modular, so there is a possibility of some firmware to work properly with the USB driver from another version. Well, if you got here already, in the worst case you'll end up with a flash drive in the shape of an MPx player. Laughing

If your player is stuck on a white screen or with something displayed, you should try to reset the player first. Some players have a reset hole on the back (mine does), use a pencil lead or a needle to press the button inside, the screen should go blank. Now follow the corresponding guide again from step 2.

If the player is stuck with the screen on and it doesn't have a reset switch, then you have to cut battery power. If you are afraid to take the device apart to remove the battery, just leave it till it drains by itself (may take a couple days). Or you can try opening the new update program, which automatically resets the player if it can detect it. Some players that get stuck on a white screen power down after connecting the USB lead for 20 seconds or more and then disconnecting it, you should try that too.

If you have a similar working player, you can use this program to get a firmware dump. Follow the program's directions and ignore any warnings it may give you, then follow the guide to recover your broken player.

Good luck! Cool

Are there anyway to extract firmware from a Sigmatel player ? I haven't seen any software can do this or tutorial about this before. Sad

Make sure you type a CAPITAL "Y", aka with the Shift key or Caps Lock turned on.

If it doesn't work it means your version can't be extracted, sorry.

Yes, your firmware was extracted successfully. You can use it as a backup, if you fuck your firmware up you can always flash this one back to restore your player to full functionality. Wink

And no, SigmaTel firmwares can't be themed yet. Maybe Dancemammal will make his firmware editor support SigmaTel devices too, but right now he's busy coding a Rockchip firmware extractor so i don't know if he'll do it.

STMP3504? If it has a 1.5 inch screen (square), try my firmware: http://www.mympxplayer.org/sigmatel-firmware-well-mp4-play01-stmp3500-df719.html

I've tried yours, thanks anyway, but no change, still no respon when powered on....
I've made "copy/paste" bootmanager and resource to mscn folder as your guide and no progress, then the whole file copied to that folder no progress either

#17:   Author: Th3_uN1Qu3 Post Posted: Sun Feb 03, 2008 9:05 pm

You have to copy all the 4/6 files to the updater folder, anyway i guess you did that already.

Hmm. It seems that there are different (incompatible) firmware versions even with the same chipset numbers... Really strange if you ask me.

don't worry!
never feel being bothered, maybe I should buy another one to get the firmware ha ha.......

I want to ask if there is tool to extract 6 files from mp3 player because I have the firmware version 002.611.101 For the boot and 002.611.300 for the player

I tryed the solution; Nice Job Smile

But the problem with me is the version of firmware I can't find it.(my ship is Sigmatel 3504-06)
When I have flashed my mp3player with a version of sigmatel ship 3504-06 it becomes non sigmatel drive but a GENERIC mp3 player and no MSCN mp3 player so it can't turn recovery mode, the firmware download tool doesnt find the hardware.

This is my driver:

No Display screen
It's like Ipod Shuffle

I have a Proline Digital RC-501 (based on SigmaTel MSCN) 256Mb
It doesn't power on with a battery, so I tried to change the firmware as indicated in this topic.
The change seems to work, but the updater can't check it at the end. And after I disconnnect the player is still dead.
I also tried the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to format it (as long as I will not use it as a mp3 player now). This tool accept the player after I applied the firmware via the updater (without removing the player) but it is not abble to do the format.

So I'm thinking that the player still work but the flash memory is dead and can no longer keep the updates. But as I'm not a specialist, Iwant to have your opinion.
Thanx in advance.

I have an I-TEK 1GB mp3 player that looks much like this one

When I turned it on, it just said Welcome and it turned itself off immediately. I found this guide and tried it. First, I put it in the recovery mode and extracted it's firmware (it's one of those that contains usbmsc.sb). Then I downloaded the file you say at the begining to update it's firmware and followed your steps. Everything went OK, supposedly.

But now I can't turn it on nor put it in the recovery mode! It just does not respond to anything, now it's absolutely dead!

Ideas? What can I do?

Thanks

#29: Note Dead 4ever? Author: sustmi Post Posted: Sat May 24, 2008 5:14 am

Hello, I need help.

I have Sencor SFP-3750 (2GB), based on Sigmatel 35xx.
Original firmware version: Sencor SFP-3750, v007.004.260
The player has same hardware as Ritmix RF-3000.

And now the problem:
Player worked well, I did many changes between Sencor's and Ritmix's firmware (versions 007.004.260 and 006.004.260) and everytime the player was dead I could bring back to life. But then I uploaded some old firmware from here (I can send you the file, when you don't have the registration, but I don't think it could help), which is one of the first versions, and since this the player doesn't work with usbmsc.sb (uploaded in Recovery mode) which worked before.
Only usbmsc.sb from v006.003.260 (i don't know the difference between 4 and 3 in minor version) works, but player shows only 1GB capacity not whole 2GB.

Even the Sigmatel Firmware Extractor shows patition(1) as 1GB instead 2GB as it was before.

When I use this usbmsc.sb to boot to recovery mode and then update to firmware, which worked before, it don't work. Neither as usb stick nor as player.

Only Sencor firmware v006.003.260 works a little. When I enable the player, it shows the Sencor logo and then it restarts ant show the logo again and again in loop. But doesn't work as usb stick (usb mass storage) just like with other firmwares.
Every other firmware, which worked before well doesn't work now.

The strange thing is that the capacity changed form 2GB to 1GB. Is not only the capacity of FAT, also the hidden partition (visible in Sigmatel Firmware Extractor) changed the capacity.
Is there any posibility how manage the internal hidden partitions.

I thought that the player couldn't be f*cked up forever. I thought that the Recovery mode (holding the play button when inserting to USB) should load the usbmsc.sb and work independent on what sh*ts are inside the players memory. Mad

EDIT:
I found that my player uses 2x1GB chip: HY27UH08AG5M. It uses Chip Select pins to set which "chip" to work with (there is only one physical chip, but two logical chips).
The v006.003.260 is 1GB firmware. It's updater.sb works (it doesn't probe the second chip). The The v006.004.260 is 2GB firmware and so it probes both chips. For some reason the 2GB uploader hangs.
Does anybody know how to fix this?
I have no idea why the 2GB uploader.sb hangs the player.

Please can you help me. I don't where could be the problem. Crying or Very sad

Thanks a lot to anybody bringing a helping hand.

sustmi wrote (View Post): ›
Summary of the problem:
- after update to wrong firmware the capacity went from 2GB to 1GB.
- only 1GB firmware booted well
- with 1GB firmware only one of two NAND chips was accessible

whole problem description:
http://www.mympxplayer.org/image-vp49144.html#49144

SOLUTION:
The problem was that the second NAND flash chip contained wrong data.
But I found the way how to erase both chips and load the firmware to the clean memory.

The chip can be erased by special SCSI command.
1.) Get the SCSI Utility from http://logix4u.net/.
2.) Connect the player to PC and initiate the Recovery Mode with updater.sb that works (in my case it was 1GB firmware v006.003.260)
3.) Run the SCSI Utility and press F5 to refresh list of connected devices
4.) Right-click on the player in the list and choose "Execute Custom CDB"
5.) Then fill the table with these values:
Code: › BYTE 0: c0
BYTE 1: 7
BYTE 2: 0
BYTE 3: 0
BYTE 4: 0
BYTE 5: 0

Other cells leave blank, so the CDB Size will be 6.
(Values are in the hexadecimal form.)
6.) Then press Execute, accept the warning and wait a moment (10 sec.).

Now the first chip is clean.
The problem is that when you have 2 chips.
You must do a "reconnection" in order to access the second chip. But don't worry, it isn't so hard as it sounds. Wink
1.) You must disassemble the player
2.) Check the NAND chip (there is only one physical flash chip, but it consists of 2 separate logical chips)
3.) Google the datasheet for you memory chip.
4.) Now you must short-cut (make a connection) the CE1 (Chip Enable 1) pin to Vcc=3.3V (if it is the specific voltage for 'logical one') to disable the first chip.
5.) Short-cut the CE2 (Chip Enable 2) pin to Vss=0V (GND) to enable the second chip.
6.) Do the erase process with the SCSI Utility again, now with the second chip.
7.) Remove the wires (the shortage).

Now you can boot (initiate Recovery Mode) with the 2GB uploader.sb and flash the 2GB firmware (select the Format Data Area in the flasher utility).

This is how I did it. Now I have whole 2GB of capacity back.
Maybe it should be enough to erase only the first chip. I have erased both and it works.

Example NAND flash datasheet:
http://www.datalabs.ru/files/HY27UH08AG(5_D)(Rev0.6).pdf

Complete list of SCSI commands:
Code: ›
byte 0:
SCSI_OPCODE_SIGMATEL_READ_COMMAND  0xc0
SCSI_OPCODE_SIGMATEL_WRITE_COMMAND 0xc1

byte 1:
GET_PROTOCOL_VERSION        0x00
GET_STATUS                  0x01
GET_LOGICAL_MEDIA_INFO      0x02
GET_LOGICAL_MEDIA_NUM       0x03
GET_ALLOCATION_TABLE        0x05
ALLOCATE_MEDIA              0x06
ERASE_LOGICAL_MEDIA         0x07
GET_LOGICAL_DRIVE_INFO      0x12
READ_LOGICAL_DRIVE_SECTOR   0x13
SET_LOGICAL_DRIVE_INFO      0x20
WRITE_LOGICAL_DRIVE_SECTOR  0x23
ERASE_LOGICAL_DRIVE         0x2f
GET_CHIP_ID                 0x30
CHIP_RESET                  0x31

If you have any questions, please ask. If you really want I can take some photos of the process.

Hello.
I have a SigmaTel MSCN Lavod Mp4 player
Its is 1 cm thin. black, has a 4/3 screen, a round pad with really odd simbols.

The problem is that the memory (2GB) can not be found anymore. not by the player itself nor by the PC.

These firmware tricks are cool and all. but how can you apply them when you can't go into the directories needed?

Thanks for the guide...

I have a mp4 watch 2gb like this...

MP4 Watch Link

I desperately need the firmware for this watch, as mine is dead, it recognizes as flash disk and when I put it in recovery mode it shows STMP3500 (I believe this is the chip in this watch)

If anyone has this watch can you please extract the firmware and send it to me?

Hi Th3_uN1Qu3!
I have a Tangent Jukebox 256MB MP3 Player, LIKE THIS.
Based on Sigmatel STMP 3502 L100E-CA6 chip with board nr. 500SF V1.9
I am not able to switch it on, but when i connect it to USB port, Win finds it as Sigmatel MSCN USB Device. On the players display appears the FW version: 2.600.100
It appears also in My Computer as Removable Disk, but i'm unable to access it, gives some I/O error.
Could You please guide me what to do, and provide some firmware.
Thank You, regards.

#43:  Re: Sigmatel recovery guide (Updated) Author: unseen Post Posted: Mon Sep 01, 2008 4:48 am

I have found a Fw with version 2.600.100
I did the upgrade, windows recognized as mass storage device, but now nothing appears on LCD, nor I cant switch it on.
I found another similar fw version 2. 611.101, but after update my player almost died completely. I was not able to put in recovery mode anymore, no matter how long i kept pressed the play button, nothing.
I was absolutely sure, that it was completely dead. In my desperation i've tried everithing, and with a huge luck, dont know how tho, i've started the FW download tool, and while it was searching for a device, i made the recovery procedure, and it came back alive again. I uploaded again the 2.600.100 fw, and works as a mass storage device.
I still need some help please, if somebody has a similar player, or knows some link.
Which of the files are for the play mode? Coz i dont want to mess anymore with the other ones.
Thanx!

Even though the firmware is modular, i could never get files from different firmware packages to work together.

If you have tried all firmware posted above or in the site's download section and none works, i'm afraid you're out of luck.

I've had a Meizu M6SL for almost an year and love it. I've given my Sigmatel player to my mom, and she only uses it as a voice recorder. It's been a while since i last played with it, and i remember spending a lot of time searching while i was messing around - firmware for those players is very hard to find, and in the end it's not really worth it.

I'm sorry i can't help you more.

Thank's a lot =) I have a MP-FUB35 2Gb mp3 player. Suddenly it said somethin' like "please, make backup of data and format me". When i connected it into PC it appears as SigmaTel USB mass storage, but didn't open, says that it has I/O error. F@cked a lot with it with many firmware updater applications and FW itself. When tried "For newer firmware (that contains hostlink.sb):" method it became alive =) Thans very much indeed =)

Hello!
I have a problem with my MP3 Player :/ It´s an Avant MP500 with 1024 mb memory, based on a Sigmatel 3502 L100 - CA4 U01142 0540 Chip. The NAND chip used is a Samsung 540 K9W8G08U1M PCB0, the board number is something like JT308MAINV1.9 2005.07.09. It is working... at least something like that. The firmware died a few days ago and I had to replace it with a firmware designed for a similar device. The Player is detected as such and able to play music, but the display just contiously lights up blue and the buttons don´t work as they should (e.g. the button "forward" lowers the volume, "louder" changes the EQ-settings and the "stop" button switches to the next song... rest doesn´t work at all).
To cut a long story short, I need working firmware!

Best regards

Hi Guys,
I have a pb with my Samsung Z5
It can't be recognised on my PC , so I have tried in UMS mode with no succes and finally by disconnect the battery and hold the button in the middle of the pad when connecting it , at this time it is seen like a stmp3600 device .
When I try software to dialog with the player in this recovery mode, software given by the updated guide (chiros sigmatel mscn stmp 3500) I have a message that indicate that the device is detected but immediately there is an error message "unable to write firmware data" .I think this is because I don't have the right firmware for my player .
So where can I find these files ?

Thanks for all

Have you tried this firmware:-
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/FM/200701/20070123173053921_Z5_Z5F_User_Update_2_47.zip

It's version 2.47, afaik you just copy it over to the player and restart.

How can I copy this in my player ?
It-is not recognised as a player, Ineed to enter in recovery mode but all the sigmatel Prog use 4 or 6 files of "firm"
This firm is only one file
So I don't understand what I can do

#61: Snif !  Author: Dangerousd777 Post Posted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 5:21 am

Aww damn mine might be screwed, it's a Mach Speed Onyx 4 GB, I think one of the firmware updates may have gotten interrupted, and I got the transfer screen to work (the charging battery and the computer displaying FS and connection to device saying ready) but whenever I try to boot the player not connected to USB it just shows a white screen. Hopefully this method works or I bricked my mp3 player and have to buy a new one. Crying or Very sad

Consecutive updates don't seem to do anything, and I don't know if the methods mentioned in this thread will even work or not.

#62:   Author: Dangerousd777 Post Posted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 5:22 am

On mine it just shows a white screen now and is only 1.85 GB as seen by windows.
I think its in recovery mode but I'm not sure, I just wish that small mistake never happened. cause there goes all the money I paid Evil or Very Mad.

#63:   Author: Dangerousd777 Post Posted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:09 am

Well I've made no foreseeable progress, and my MP3 player is still bricked (1.8 inch LCD with SigmaTel MSCN chip). If this is of any help, then SigmaTel firmware version is 885.282.509. I'm feeling doubtful about recovery so I'm just going to make arrangements to buy a new mp3 player. I knew I should have probably gotten the Sansa instead.

I bricked my onyx 2gig the first day i got it. when updating the firmware i got a screen that said i need to reboot for changes to take effect for my new hardware so i clicked ok and of course i could never get the player back up. took it to the store and told them it never worked and they replaced it.
Not gonna mess with the firmware now lol.

Hi friends!

An year ago i found solution about one MP4 player here. I have nother problem: Matsui 140MR 4G, when i try to start it on the screen appears "Boot error". This problem starts when my brother did something with the player (i think he tried to format it). When i put it in the USB computer's port it recoignze the player as USB Mass Storage Device (as normal) BUT with 0 KB space. Second format is not possible...

I search many places and forums but i found solutions only for older models. This one is with Sigmatel chip 3630 and the older software not recognize it (stuck on the "searching connected devices" screen). Can anyone tell me what i can do (except throw it on place where no one can found it Wink ) I have Windows and Linux operating systems so if someone can help i'll be happy Smile

Hello All!

I have Proline MP702SF model.
It looks like this:
http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/a7/5c/78/75056694-300x300-0-0_Pro+Line+MP702SF+4+GB.jpg
and it has 2GB memory.
I have a wrong firmware installed. I tried it since the player was way too quiet. When I listen to it, I could hear my own voice and everything around me. I thought downloading a new firmware would solve this but instead it is dead now.
I have tried most of these things posted here and none works. Sigmatel file starts to extract the first file but it is working it endlessly.
Is there hope? I hope so.
PLEASE HELP!!
