PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 12:21 am   Post subject: Question linux support?? Back to top

Was wondring if anybody had any informaion for linux users?
I have what was advertised as an 8 gigabyte ipod nano replica.
I cracked it open and found

firmare
action
act209x_s75_cy
9.0.50

button board: zx-6012m-lts v4.0 key

chip one: 65nm 8Gb MLC NAND Flash
samsumg 701
k9g8g08u0m
pcbo
fe3781

battery?:
rp432030p
200mah
3.7v

processor: Actions Semiconductor Co., ltd
ATJ2093H
FC126FA 5CH

Some MINI-CHIP: I have no idea, it is close to the audio and usb ports
"SPF"
3P3767HN
06LS28

I believe it was this originally http://www.mp4nation.com/products/index.php?PID=mp8272B

I used a tool called "testdisk" for linux to do advanced partition scans. When set t normal mode it shows up as an 8gig, wen in encryped only mode it showed up as a 512 meg device with FOUR, count them FOUR seprate bootable partitions, on one device??? And when in multi mode it all showed up both. So, I deleted all of the partition table information, this is the result:

encrypted only:
Disk /dev/sdg - 1049 KB / 1024 KiB - CHS 683 1 3

normal only:
Disk /dev/sdf - 8585 MB / 8188 MiB - CHS 8188 64 32

full analysis of the normal drive causes system hang, always.

The memory usage on the player reads to zero after deleting the partition table info, but the device still shows up in my partition editors as an 8 gig device instead of a 1 gig device.

What can I do to these partiions in linux (ubuntu) to get them to reflect the actual size of the disk?

after formating to fat32:
it sais I have used 1% of the dis, and thatthere is about 8 gigs left.
help?

where are linux tools for this firmware?

alienseer23 , there is a useful formatting guide using Linux posted by another member using Ubuntu here http://www.3till7.net/2007/04/19/how-to-reformat-your-pen-drive/

Hope this is useful to you.

AHA!
Linux Users are in luck!!!
So, I followed the link provided by lattesurf, and discovered the fdisk utility, and began to play with it. All that is required is that you use fdisk to create a new empty partition table. Yep. That's it.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO is:
Preparation:
!!!make sure the device is UNMOUNTED!
1. In Ubuntu: System--->Prferences--->Removable Drives and Media
then make sure the tab for "mount removable drives when hot-plugged" is unticked.
2. set the player to normal mode for online mode thru the firmware.
...Now Connect the device and move on....
3. plug in the player
4. open a terminal (Applications-->accessories--terminal)
5. type in: sudo fdisk -l
this will list ALL drives and partitions on your system.
6. type in: sudo fdisk /dev/YOURDEVICE
your device will show as something like /dev/sdf1
...now you are in fdisk...
you can optionally choose at this point to manually delet all of the partitions that you can find, you should find 4.
This is ok, but not 100% required.
7. now type "o" this will create a new empty partition table.
Doing this step will fix your device.
8. type "w"
this will write the info to the device and exit fdisk.
9. reboot the device, plug it in, and reformat th drive using the partition editor of your choice!
You should now see it as its correct size, congrats!

You can also use the GUI program gparted. Make sure you turn off automounting when hot-plugged like you did with your fdisk example before you use it, though, as it doesn't yet play nice with Nautilis.

techt:
I tried gparted to simply repartition, several times, and it did not fix the hacked size problem. Actually used all of the gparted options to try to fix the hack, couldn't get it to work.
Anyway, writing in a new BLANK partition table with fdisk was the only thing that caused the player to show up with the correct size.
After that I used gparted to partition.
You used gparted and it showed the correct size?
What did you do? I could not gparted to do that.
