Just got it today: bid, won and paypal cleared on 21 jan. No time yet to damp 3.9 GB of music into it and play it back to check, but for sure I've split it apart - well I mean, I've unscrewed it open - to discover the 2x2GB configuration I' ve spoken of in my previous post. To be precise 2 Samsung K9LAG080M chips on board plus, of course, the control chip.
No time either to take pics right now. Hopefully I'll be back later with them.
So, rush to the right, honest , respectful shangsan, don't worry if this busy man does not answer your mails, wait 10 days or so and ENJOY true 4GB of flash storage for less than 55 (US, not even AU, yeah dude...) bucks!
As expected, the player itself is the 1.5 oz of chinese crap you expected, not (much) worse than Apple's nano, btw: it plays decent music, and the FM tuner seems to do a fair job. Other functionalities not yet tested. from Paris, France; Kerdu.

as for the 1.5 oz... i cheated... i filled every available spot on mp4 player with hot glue.. this prevents damage from shaking it... and makes it feel heavier, as if i got more for my money..


i think the guys that sale these, should prep em first with hot glue... even if it's a small amount.... but mine is wayyyyy full ..

Back with the ‘ dang ’ review you wanted, and pics; sorry for the delay but no break since then.

From the outside: well, exactly what I’ve ordered: a dull regular black nanoclone, regular weight, regular measurements: 3”9/16 x 1”10/16 x 6/16 ( for metric minds: 91 x41 x 8.8 mm);
It looks what it is: cheap; ‘SHABBY’ CHIC starts here.





From the inside: you’ll see more than I can say on the pic: 2 x 2GB (look for the fourth key in the code on the chip: A means 16Gb = 2GB) samsung chips.

It plays mp3 and wma files; it plays them fine: my files are high variable bitrate, and it seems comfortable with them. Doesn’t want to read my .ogg files though.

The video is OK considering the size of the gadget; it takes some time and patience to convert to the proprietary format .amv, but it’s then sort of fun for watching short clips. (sequences from, say, your digital cam). Same for the .jpg viewer: definitely not a HD wallsize tv screen(remember: 1.5”!), but it’s good enough not to mistake a gook for a wasp.

Something I appreciated more than everything is some unexpected function they forgot to advertize about: htis chipod can play music when battery’s trained out of juice. Shake gently to get a middle range clingling from the click-wheel (oh yeaaah, it does click, even when not asked for); want to add some deeper sound to it?: tilt it more seriously to have the battery cell knocking the box from inside and trim to the desired rythm and level; would prefer some more subtle plastic whispers? No problem the on/off switch has been designed for it!
Really enjoy this feature of my mp4: that’s “Shabby Chic” for sure...

Someone on the forum suggested you’d feed your player fat with hot glue to fix this issue: although I’m pretty sure it’d be very efficient, I just wonder why you would not take advantage of such a smart functionality I’ve just described.

One more thing: I’d read in some places, including some user’s manuals, it could manage 99 folders each with 99 files, but no deeper folder; being a linux-adict I’d appreciate some deeper tree to allow for neater sorting: tested it, just in case ... was right to give it a chance since it works smoothly, hassleless, to at least as deep as 4 levels.(I’ll test “deeper” trees an other time). Btw, firmware is [...].50.

I haven’t said a word of the included “User manual”; it itself is worth the 55 bucks I paid; a true piece of “on progress chinglish litterature” : michiganfrog suggested you swallow relevant mushrooms and/or smoke and drink what’s necessary before you hope to make any sense of just a line. That’s “reverse engineering” as they say: mimic what they did to translate from chinese to whatever they don’t even care.

Would love to hear your feedback once you fill up your player with 4GB of files. That would be a true tester.

If you don't have 4GB of data to fill your playe, what I would suggest is just a repeat copy-paste of your existing files.

I've damped like 2.7GB of (good, maybe this is the point!) music down on it, and it plays any sample I give a try ... I was somewhat anxious when loading over the 2GB line since no-one on the forum had ever reported doing it successfully on any "noname" chipod. I now feel confident it'll behave nicely up to the available 3.82GB it boasts.
I've also downloaded back to my laptop randomly chosen songs/movements stored on the player, and, well, all such files are unaltered (linux has a tool to compare files) and will play perfectly to my hi-fi.
The reason why I haven't downloaded the full 3.8 GB yet is lack of time and the only grief I' m holding against it: the damn "skipping to last played song" issue I spoke of earlier when scrolling thru the directories : first, browsing is in any case very slooooooooow, and while the chip lists (or at least seems to do so) the directories you may be "undesirably" prompted to the "last played song".

It may be the chip is sort of "too weak" to deal with so many entries... Hopefully it's only a software issue, that a coming firmware would improve? Can someone provide help or advise? Kerdu, happy in Paris, hopefully yet happier after your answer .

unfortunately nothing can be done about the slowness during navigation i think. its a common problem in mp4 players and almost everyone has it

It sounds to me like you may not be using it correctly. It will play the last song if you dont hit the right key. The trick to remember is always press the MENU key (briefly) for almost every action, EXCEPT when you are in the MUSIC (or MOVIE) screen (the screen that is usually blue, where you see the song title, kbps, battery indicator, running time, etc). Then you hit PLAY to start the song (go through LOCAL FOLDER and \ using the MENU key to locate the song you want to play). I find, on my FMP at least, once you get the hang of it, its really not bad. The frustrating thing is that its a bit slow to react and you may overshoot the song (in the folder list), so if that happens, I go backward (with the REV key) and it will scroll up the list as well as down, even if youve gone beyond the last title.

Hi again, Michiganfrog; I've been off to the Alps' snow for a while, a lost place "in the Highest", a paradise with no serious web connection. I'm afraid - thanks to your previous chinglish lesson and a few experiments - I manage to properly operate the player, and the "skipping issue" I've reported is a serious one;

the trick I've been using for a while is to hit hte "previous "(or "next") key right after I short press the "menu" key to browse the (now fairly long) directory list. If not, I'd be prompted with the "last played song" (the blue screen you speak of ) after a while, before or right after the list appears on the screen, and, in any case, before I can scroll the list to select a directory. The trick is not neat, but, well, as yet it works! The issue seems to be a preset timer which I can't (or at least don't know how to) trim.
As for the memory being legit 4 GB, the player is now stuffed with 3.9 GB of music, recording, and video and plays everything smoothly, ... but for the "skipping issue" . Best, Kerdu.

Thanks Kerdu, I just bought an mp3 player, 4gb, for about 60 bucks, and 15 dollars shipping from Hong Kong. The guy looks pretty legitimate, and the mp3 is a 2nd generation nanoclone. The guy even shows a picture of the 2 flash memory. I hope I get it right this time. Wish me luck!!
